Ipê Decking is Hard… Hard to Get!

Are you experiencing delays with your Ipê orders?
Can’t confirm a price?
Curious what alternatives are out there?

Ipê (Brazilian Walnut) supply constraints are starting to cause major concerns among contractors and distributors. With new CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) regulations on Ipê and Cumaru, shipments of these tropical hardwoods seem to be at a snail’s pace, if shipped at all. But, there is a solution…

Meet MOSO® Bamboo products that are thermally modified, have multiple profiles (decking, cladding, square stock lumber, and fencing), are about 30% harder than Ipê, install faster, and most importantly, are AVAILABLE in the US for immediate delivery. MOSO® Bamboo products are made from an abundant resource (Moso bamboo) in a controlled environment, producing dimensionally stable lumber that will not warp, cup, twist, or bow. Their products come with a 25-year warranty and are a natural, sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods, allowing you to worry about your next contract, not when your shipment of Ipê will arrive.

Sustainable Products = Sustainable Profits

Why the Decline of Ipê Lumber?

With exotic hardwoods being over-harvested (or illegally cut down) for years, international trade groups intervened to regulate species that are on a path to being endangered. In November 2024, all imports of Ipê and Cumaru into the United States will require CITES documentation. Suppliers and importers must demonstrate that their wood is sourced legally and sustainably. This requirement has significantly impacted deliveries of new Ipê under the established regulations.

MOSO® Bamboo vs Ipê: Product Availability
Because bamboo is a fast-growing, self-regenerating material, supply is exceptional, and MOSO® Bamboo products are readily available throughout the US in multiple warehouses that can ship products to you in a few days. Demand for Ipê is still high. While it is still available in the US, supply is quickly declining, driving the price up and making it more challenging to generate healthy margins and hit project deadlines. Is that a gamble you are willing to take? Similar arguments can be made for other exotic alternatives like Cumaru, Garapa, and Tigerwood.

MOSO® Bamboo vs Ipê:
Price Stability Since bamboo is an abundant resource, MOSO® Bamboo products are readily available, maintain minimal price fluctuations, and allow you to stay on budget and hit deadlines. On the other hand, when Ipê is in high demand or supply is low, prices dramatically fluctuate, causing you to lose jobs or re-quote jobs at a much higher price. Is it worth considering a product with stable pricing to confidently go after new business? MOSO® Bamboo keeps inventory in the US, allowing you to increase your business pipeline.

MOSO® Bamboo vs Ipê: Installation
MOSO® Bamboo Decking is 6’ lengthy, installs with a fastener into profiled grooves, and has end-matched boards allowing you to seam off-joist (up to 24” on center). This means less waste, less cutting, and significant time saved face-screwing every single board. MOSO® Bamboo is dimensionally stable, does not warp, cup twist, or bow, and does not require end sealing in most climates.

Ipê comes in multiple lengths and requires face screwing and precision cutting so all boards land perfectly on a joist. Boards might also need to be manipulated to be precisely straight during installation. How much time would you save if you were only cutting starter boards and finish boards?

MOSO Bamboo Decking installation is about 30% faster than Ipê.

Thermally Modified Bamboo: The Next Era of Natural Lumber
Just like cell phones, technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, allowing for highly innovative manufacturing techniques and applications for bamboo. It is a natural, thermally modified product and manufactured to be 30% harder than Ipê. It’s likely the hardest, most stable natural product on the market, and it ships ready to install.

A Sustainable Replacement that Looks and Behaves Like Tropical Hardwoods.

MOSO® Bamboo vs Ipê: How Long Does it Take to Grow?
Moso bamboo (the species) is harvested every 4-5 years & regenerates new bamboo with no additional planting. It’s called the “wonder plant” for a reason. Tropical hardwoods (like Ipê) can take up to 80 years to grow and must actively be replanted so new trees can replace them. Simply put, the rainforests don’t grow fast enough for our appetite, and supply can’t keep up with demand.
